While it is difficult to predict the future, there are distinct developments that already reveal what the world will look like in the upcoming years. Among others, China and the European Union are important actors on the global stage who claim their right to have a say in finding solutions for the most pressing issues of our times.

A close second to Petra on the list of favorite destinations in Jordan is the ancient city of Jerash, where students headed to on the third day of this year’s GPSS Jordan. The city dates back more than 6500 years and is considered the longest unbroken chain of human occupation still existing. Later through the program, participants also visited the “city of mosaics”, Madaba, and Mt. Nebo, known to be as the place from where Moses viewed the Holy Land of Canaan he would never enter.
The Global Politics Seasonal Schools aim to not offer an academic program to the students, but also give insight into practical perspectives. It is for this reason that Dr. Bettina Marx, head of Heinrich Boell Foundation Palestine and Jordan, invited representatives of the Jordanian Women’s Union as well as founders of Al-Hudood and Swot to GJU talk about their projects in Amman and the region. A day after, Prof. Sahar Makhamreh once again gave an insightful talk on the situation of refugees in Jordan. Afterwards, participants visited Collateral Repair Project, an international NGO aiming at helping those in need in Amman.
Towards the end of the program, Tim Petschulat, head of FES Jordan & Iraq introduced their recently published study on “Coping with Uncertainty: Youth in the MENA Region”. He also touched upon the political situation in Jordan and explained some of their most recent projects on site. The last module of the school included a simulation game. It was carried out by planpolitik and dealt with developments in the so called “Inotian Union” regarding migration politics.
On Friday, this year’s summer school in Jordan will come to an end with its traditional farewell dinner at Zajal Restaurants, where all participants will receive their certificates of completing the program.
